The Meanders of the Unconscious
Cast & Crew
Synopsis
Pat Andrea is a contemporary Dutch artist who explores the depths of the unconscious and the complexities of human relationships. His work, both seductive and disturbing, is often associated with the New Subjectivity art movement. He is a major figure on the international contemporary art scene, working in the fields of painting, sculpture, and engraving.
Inspired by the masters of the Renaissance and Surrealism, Pat Andrea has developed a unique style of magical realism that explores the depths of the unconscious and the complexity of human relationships. His technical virtuosity plunges viewers into a dreamlike and unsettling universe, populated by ambiguous, often erotic figures. In this universe, reality and fantasy question the power of images and their capacity to reveal the unconscious.
According to Cerise Dumont, who holds a Master’s degree in Art History from the University of Geneva, a Master’s degree in anthropology and film enthusiast, says that “woman is not merely a subject; she is a sovereign force, mistress of the enclosed or absurd spaces in which the artist places her characters. The dog, another recurring motif, emerges as a double of the female figures, a silent witness to their wanderings and their confinement. The architectural elements, often reduced to a few walls or openings, complete this setting of alienation, halfway between a theatrical scene and an oppressive dream, a bit like Alice in Wonderland passing through the looking glass.”
New Subjectivity (Neue Subjektivität) is an artistic movement that emerged in Germany in the 1970s in reaction to the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit), an artistic movement of the 1920s considered too conceptual. The two movements differ fundamentally in their relationship to the world. While one observes the world, the other observes the soul. One is facing outwards, the other inwards. One criticizes society and social injustices in a cold and incisive manner, the other explores the inner and emotional landscape of the individual, much like a personal diary.
